Make intentions clear before offering ‘assistance’, PPP told

KUCHING: People’s Progressive Party (PPP) should come clean on its decision to spread its wings to Sarawak before offering its ‘sincere’ assistance to the State Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming general election.

PBB youth vice chief Pandi Suhaili pointed out that so far the explanations provided by the party leaders were non-satisfactory.

“In the past the party said it had to come to Sarawak because of requests made by few hundred Sarawakians.

“It is not a good argument because those who wanted to bring in Umno claimed to have ten thousand Sarawakians behind their efforts but still Umno didn’t want to come in as the party respected the local parties in the state.

“To us in the PBB Youth, when PPP decided not to emulate Umno in respecting the spirit of Barisan Nasional, it showed us that the party had an ulterior motive of coming over here,” he said when contacted yesterday.

KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party’s poor performance in the last state election should not be used as the basis for approving the application by Peninsula-based People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to set up a branch in Sarawak.

A PBB youth state exco Ambrose Jemut Ukam said Putra Jaya is making a big mistake in assuming that PPP could be an alternative to SUPP in the state.

“SUPP is a Chinese-dominant party while PPP is not. Therefore, don’t use the party’s loss of many seats in the last election as a reason to come in,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He pointed out that although SUPP only won six out of 19 seats contested in the last election, Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) still managed to get more than two-thirds majority in the election.

“If the Sarawak BN had lost in the last election, then we have no qualms accepting any Semenanjung-based component party of BN here but that is not the case.

KUCHING: The Secretary General of Sarawak Barisan Nasional Datuk Stephen Rundi Itom yesterday warned People’s Progressive Party (PPP) that the state BN would not compromise the presence of the party in the state if it jeopardizes the strength and structure of the Sarawak BN.

Rundi, who is also the Secretary General of PBB,the backbone of the Sarawak BN Government, said the presence of the party here will not help the BN as a whole because the party is not even doing well in Semenanjung.

“I dont want to pre-empt their motives but if it jeopardizes the Sarawak BN components’ strength and structure, we will not compromise.

“They are not doing well in Semenanjung … I don’t see what good they can do here either,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The secretary general, who is to-date the highest ranking Sarawak BN leader to comment on the approval given by the Registrar of Society (ROS) to PPP to open up branches in the state, said it would be better form BN as a whole if the party focuses on efforts to strengthen its base in the states in the peninsula before “thinking of spreading its wings to Sarawak.”

BINTULU: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) state youth vice-chief Pandi Suhaili has condemned Movement of Change Sarawak (MoCS) leader Francis Paul Siah for threatening to organise street demonstrations.

Siah had threatened to organise street demonstrations if Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud does not step down by Aug 13.

Yesterday, Pandi filed a police report against Siah along with Bintulu Anaq Vaie Association (PAVB) members. He called Siah’s threat subversive as it could incite the people.

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth Wing refutes a claim by the Election Commission (EC) that intense campaigning is expected to take place in Balingian where party president Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is the incumbent.

Its vice Youth chief Pandi Suhaili said the election commission should go to the ground to verify any report or feedback on the situation in each constituency.

“It is a mistake by the election commission to identify the seat as expected to have intense campaigning,” he said.

He added that EC should not listen and act based on any hearsay or rumours which were aimed to give negative perception about Taib.

On Monday, EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar announced that additional enforcement teams would be stationed in nine seats — Pantai Damai, Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawa, Kedup, Repok, Dudong, Pelawan, Nangka and Balingian — to cope with the expected intense campaigning in the constituencies.

KUCHING: The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) youth wing has labelled the public squabbles of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) component parties over state constituencies as confirmation that they are only interested in getting power.

PBB vice-youth chief Pandi Suhaili said the tussle on seat allocation further strengthen the perception that the opposition is not concerned about the people’s welfare.

“The public squabbles on the seat allocation clearly shows that they are blinded and guided by their greed to wrest power from BN (Barisan Nasional) at all costs,” said Pandi, who is also the youth wing’s economy bureau chief, when contacted.

He said although Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) might choose to put aside their differences later, voters should not be convinced by the supposed show of unity.

He pointed out that if the two parties are really sincere about serving the rakyat, they would not openly disagree over the constituencies.

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general Dr Stephen Rundi dismissed talks that his party was interested to take over Bengoh seat from Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) as mere “political rumours”.

This is because PBB had always been loyal to its fellow component parties in Barisan Nasional (BN) and would never resort to any tactic to undermine any component party, he pointed out.

“It is never in our agenda to backstab a fellow component party in BN. We will always cooperate with all the parties in BN,” he said when contacted yesterday.

PBB supreme council member Datuk Dr James Dawos was the first to respond to the rumours when he was asked by the press last Saturday.

He had said as far as BN was concerned, Bengoh was and would continue to belong to SUPP unless there was a seat swapping agreement.

PBB Youth lodges police report on Radio Free S’wak

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth is urging the police to take action against Radio Free Sarawak if investigation shows it has violated the country’s Sedition Act.

The Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should also take action against the radio station if it is operating without a valid licence.

The party’s vice-Youth chief Pandi Suhaili said they decided to lodge a police report after Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Joseph Salang said MCMC could take action against the radio station.

“We hope the authorities take harsh action against the radio station because it is causing the rakyat to feel uneasy with the content of its broadcasting, which we understand is instigating them to hate the government,” he said when met at Simpang Tiga Police Station yesterday.

He added that the peace and harmony enjoyed by the rakyat were under threat from the radio station said to be operating illegally in the country.
